Joppa Addition and Restoration
This substantial addition to a mid-1800s Quaker-style home is in progress and was completed in late December 2001.
The homeowner approached Van Deusen Construction Company, Inc. because he needed to add significant living space to his charming older farm home and he also wanted to arrange for prolonged residency in his home as older age approached. This project would involve several challenges. VDC had to design an addition that looked compatible with the age and style of the original home. Second, some of the existing living space had to be configured and new space added so that the home will better accommodate the owner as he ages. Finally, the VDC team has to deal with many eccentricities inherent to an older home such as 18-inch stonewalls and uneven flooring.
The existing home is a typical four-room design, two rooms wide and two rooms deep with a center hall. To address all of the owner's needs, VDC designed a 1,000 square foot first-floor addition to house a master suite and additional public rooms for entertaining. These included a 35-foot x 18-foot solarium area and a study.
Designs included using some of the same materials common both to the house and to houses from that era, including native stone (used in the design and construction of the solarium and bedroom and study area) cedar shingles (replaced on the main house and used on the addition) and standing seam metal (used over the new study and solarium area).
