Towson Accessible Remodel Project
The Van Deusen Construction Company received a 2001 Chrysalis Award for Best Accessible Remodel Project for its work on this project. The awards, begun in 1994 and sponsored by Professional Remodeler magazine, recognize the nation's best remodeling work in over 30 categories.
The award-winning project consisted of a 700 square foot two-story addition to a 40 year-old single-family home in Towson, Maryland. The homeowners needed to remodel their home to accommodate the husband's growing need for handicap accessibility after being diagnosed with ALS. The project involved the addition of a new kitchen, a second floor master bedroom and bathroom and an exterior stamped concrete patio with ramp. The homeowner's needs also required the design and installation of a handicap accessible, two-person elevator and a shower with wheelchair accessibility.
The owners wanted to dramatically improve the accessibility of their home without calling attention to the alterations. Van Deusen Construction Company was able to discreetly enhance accessibility to most areas of the home, help the family remain in the neighborhood they loved and significantly improve the family's quality of life during a very difficult time.
